The lawyer’s translation service is a service, which has an increasing demand in Greece the recent years. In order to understand what exactly is this service and why someone, even a person with excellent knowledge of a foreign language, should ask a third party for a translation, we should explain the meaning of “an official translation.”
Nowadays, it is much easier than ever, for a Greek student to attend a Master’s degree or a PhD at universities abroad, for a Greek to work in a foreign country, for a Greek company to expand its business in foreign markets or for a foreign company to expand its activities in Greece. Actually, for some very specific reasons, the number of Greek people that decides to go abroad for work or studies has increased significantly the recent years, while many Greek companies transfer their headquarters or some of their activities abroad.
In all the above cases (and in many others), is needed the official translation of several documents and certificates from Greek to another language or vice versa. More specifically, some of the documents that would need to be translated are:
- Degrees
- Transcripts
- Several certificates
- Birth/Death certificates
- Several tax documents
- Court Decisions
- Statutes of Companies
- Contracts
- Balance sheets
With official translation (or certified translation) we mean the translation of any document (not only those listed above) by translators specified by law. According to the Articles 52-53 of the LD 3026/1954, and to the Lawyers’ Code of PD 169 of 17.06.2002 (Government Gazette 156 / 2.7.02), official are only the translations from:
- The translation service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Greece.
- The lawyers that has registered in the Law Society that they have excellent knowledge of the language of the original and the translated text.
- The Professional Translators that graduate from the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University.
All the above three ways to translate a document, provides a valid translation. Of course, the choice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an official translation is not always possible as it supports a limited number of languages (22) and for these languages there are other inhibitors, such as the extremely reduced hours of operation and many days of waiting. For this reason and because the number of lawyers is much bigger than the professional translators, the lawyers predominate in the official translations.
